Customizing your Course Navigation
When a new Canvas course is created or you import content from a different course, the navigation menu of your course will be adjusted to show either the default menu items or the menu settings of the course you imported from. If you would like to change what pages are visible to your student in your current course, please follow the instructions below.
- In your Canvas course, navigate to Settings. This should be the last navigation link at the bottom of the menu.
-
Click on the Navigation tab.
-
In the Navigation settings page that opens, you will see two parts: the top is the sections you want students to see [1], and the bottom is the sections you want to hide from student view [2]
- You can drag and drop items to reorder them in the course navigation.
- You can also drag the top items down to hide them, or drag lower items up to make them visible to students.
- If the page is long or dragging is difficult for you, you can also click the three vertical dots to the right of an item and choose Enable or Disable from the menu that appears.
- Click the Save button at the bottom to apply this change.
Notes
- Some menu items that have been disabled or hidden may still be listed in the course navigation menu. These hidden menu items will display a Visibility icon (an eye with a slash through it) next to them.
- Some menu items that you have enabled may also display this visibility icon if there is not currently any content in that tool. For example, if you have not yet posted an announcement in your course, Announcements will have this visibility icon and will not be visible to students. Once you post an announcement, the visibility icon will go away and students will be able to see Announcements in the course navigation menu.
- Hovering over menu items that have this visibility icon will tell you why students cannot see it. You will see either "No content. Not visible to students" or "Disabled. Not visible to students"
