Set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) offers extra protection for you and our campus resources by requiring two different methods to verify your identity. When you log in to New England Law | Boston resources on a new device or while off campus, you may be prompted to confirm your identity using the MFA methods that you have set for your account. We recommend using the Microsoft Authenticator app, which is what this guide will focus on.
You will need:
- A mobile device, such as an Apple or Android phone, that you own and can install apps on
- A computer that's connected to the internet
To set up a new MFA method or confirm what methods you have previously set up, please follow the steps below.
- Download the Microsoft Authenticator app if you don't already have it installed.
- Scan the relevant QR code on the Microsoft Security page: Download Microsoft Authenticator
- Search for "Microsoft Authenticator" on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
- Navigate to the Microsoft account Security info page on your computer.
- If you're not already logged in or if you've previously set up MFA authentication, you may be prompted to log in and verify your identity.
- On the Security info page, click "+ Add sign-in method".
- Select "Microsoft Authenticator" from the "Add a sign-in method" menu that opens.
- Click Next when prompted to download the app or see Step 1 for how to install the Microsoft Authenticator app if you still need to do so.
- Click Next again when prompted to begin setting up your account with Microsoft Authenticator.
- You should see a new page with a QR code. Don't click anything on this page for now.
- On your mobile device:
- Open the Microsoft Authenticator app and select the "+" icon in the upper right to add a new account.
- When prompted, select "Work or school account"
- Select "Scan QR code"
- On your computer, you should still see the QR code from Step 8. Use your mobile device to scan this QR code, then click Next.
- The Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device will ask you to confirm the account you're trying to access and will prompt you to enter a number.
- The number you need will be on your computer's screen. In the example image below, the number is 23. Your number during setup and each time you try to access your account in the future will be a different randomly generated number.
- Enter the number from your computer into the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device. Click "Yes" to confirm.
- On your computer you will see confirmation that the Microsoft Authenticator's notification has been approved. Click "Next" to complete the setup.
- (Optional) You will see an option to add a phone number for additional security. While this is not required, adding a phone number may increase your account's security and assist with account recovery in the future if needed.
