Faculty: Retrieving attendance codes for your classes
The aPlus+ Attendance tool automatically generates attendance codes for each class session of the semester. Through Canvas, you can retrieve the attendance codes for class sessions up to 14 days in the past and up to 180 days in the future from the current date. We recommend retrieving attendance codes close to your first class session to ensure that all codes will be listed. If your class days or times change after you retrieve codes, you'll need to repeat this process to retrieve the new class sessions' codes.
- In Canvas, navigate to your Course and click "Attendance" in the course navigation.

- You may see a message indicating that the attendance tool is still loading. Please wait for this to finish before navigating to a different page.
- Depending on the browser you're using and any security settings you have set, you may see a message that says "One more step." at the top. This means that your browser was unable to load the attendance tool within the Canvas window and has to open it in a new window instead.

- Click the link that says "Click here to continue".
- In the new window that opens, you may see a screen that says "APlus API is requesting access to your account". Verify that the name and email address in this screen are correct, then click Authorize to continue. This will allow the APlus Attendance tool to log you in by communicating with your Canvas account.
- By default, aPlus Attendance will display the list of your students and any attendance statuses entered for the current week. Click Codes from the menu above the attendance data.

- If you opened a new window in Step 2, this menu will be after the "Skip course navigation" link when using a keyboard or assistive technology for navigation.
- In the Attendance Codes popup, you'll see a list of sessions for your course and the code for each session along with a confirmation of the time window students will be able to use the code.

- When using assistive technology, this window may be read as a series of ordered lists, with each list containing the details of a class session.
- If you see "(No code)" for each session instead of an automatically generated code, the attendance system may be set to provide students with a button to click instead. You can change this setting by selecting "Static Code" from the dropdown menu next to "Entry method".
Downloading attendance codes
There is no report that will allow you to download all of your attendance codes in bulk. You will either need to retrieve each code individually from Canvas when preparing for your class sessions or use a workaround like copying and pasting the table of codes into a different program. The instructions below are for the web version of Microsoft Excel.
- While you have the codes window open in Canvas, select all of the information listed for the class sessions.
-
Tip: Click and hold from the left of the "Date" column heading and drag your mouse to the bottom of the window. The list of sessions should scroll as you drag down. Once all the information is highlighted, you can let go of the mouse button.
- Copy the selected text.
- Open a new tab or window and navigate to Microsoft OneDrive.
- Click + Add new, then choose "Excel workbook" from the menu.
- A blank Excel spreadsheet will open in your browser. Rename the spreadsheet to include information to help you find the codes again, such as the class title and semester.
- Click the Paste / clipboard icon.
- Under "Paste Special", choose "Values only".
- The table formatting from Canvas will not be preserved. Instead, you will have a single column with all of the pasted data. Each code will be on the row below the date it's valid for.
- Reformat or copy the codes elsewhere as needed for your use.
