Faculty: Managing attendance notifications
The notification system through aPlus+ attendance will generate an email every morning if one or more of your students is at risk of exceeding or has already exceeded their maximum allowed absences. These are automated notifications that can't be turned off, but they can be managed using the filtering options in Outlook.
We recommend reviewing the emails that have been filtered at least once a week for any new students that have received a warning.
Outlook
Note: The instructions below are written for the web version of Microsoft Outlook. If you need assistance determining which version of Outlook you're using, please see Microsoft's What version of Outlook do I have? guide.
-
Open and sign into Outlook in your web browser of choice.
- If you're off campus or not connected to campus wi-fi, you may be prompted to authenticate your account using multifactor authentication. If you need help signing in, please submit a ticket for assistance.
- Create a folder to organize the attendance notifications into by right-clicking on or hovering over Folders in the left pane. Select More options, then Create new folder.

- Since a single notification may include students from more than one of your classes, we recommend creating a new, generic folder called something obvious such as "Attendance notifications".
- If you're using a different version of Outlook or need additional information about how to create a folder, please see Microsoft's Create a folder or subfolder in Outlook guide.
- After your folder is created, we recommend opening the folder and clicking the star next to its name labeled "Add to Favorites". This will make the folder easier to find in the future.
- Open one of the Attendance Warning Notification emails.
- In the ribbon above the message, click the Rules icon, then Create rule.

- Depending on the size of your screen, you may not see this icon right away. If the icon is not visible, click the three dots for More Options.
- You can also access the option to Create Rule by right-clicking on the message in your inbox list and hovering over Rules.
- In the "Create a rule" popup window, click "Select a folder" and choose the folder you created for the attendance notifications.
- Click OK to apply the rule to all incoming messages.
- As new messages get filtered by the rule, you'll see a number next to the folder name indicating how many unread messages are in the folder.

- As you review these messages every week, it may be helpful to make sure they're all marked as read.

If you typically use a mobile app on your phone or tablet to check your mail, you may not see the same options for creating rules or filtering messages. Some resources that may help you find your folders or organize your mail are included below.
