Viewing your OneDrive files in Canvas
You can search your Microsoft OneDrive files and open them for editing through Canvas.
- Open any of your courses in Canvas.
- Click the Office 365 link in the course navigation.
- The page may take a moment to load. If you see a list of your files and folders, then you don't need to login again and can skip the following steps.
- If you see a Log In screen instead of a list of files, click the Log In button.
- In the new window that opens, confirm that your correct account details are listed where it says that Office365 is requesting access to your account. Click "Authorize" to continue.
- If the authorization is successful, you may be prompted to complete additional steps in Office 365. Start by clicking the "Log In to Office 365" button.
- If prompted, enter your nesl.edu email account and password in the Microsoft 365 login page.
- You should be directed back to the Canvas Office 365 page. It will refresh and show you a list of the files and folders you have saved to Microsoft OneDrive.
Navigating OneDrive in Canvas
Note: Any user that clicks the Office 365 link in the course will see their own personal files. Seeing your files listed by this application does not mean your files are shared with the other users in your Canvas course.
The OneDrive application in Canvas only provides basic information about your files and folders. You can see the item name, the date and time it was last modified, and the file size.

By default, folders are listed first before files and all items are listed in alphabetical order A-Z. The OneDrive application within Canvas does not allow you to choose a different sorting for your files and folders.
Folders will display with a solid folder icon next to their name and won't have a value listed in the File Size column. If a file is a supported Microsoft file type (doc, docx, xlsx, ppt, etc) or a pdf, a corresponding file type icon will be displayed to the left of the name and the file size will be listed.

If you need to find a specific file:
- Type a keyword for the file in the Search box, then hit Enter on your keyboard.
- Click the name of the file you want to edit.
- The file will open in the corresponding Microsoft 365 application in a new window. You can continue working in Canvas even while that window is open.
- To start a new search or go back to viewing all your files and folders, use the Backspace or Delete keys on your keyboard to clear the search box.
Troubleshooting
- If your course does not have the Office 365 link, then the Microsoft Office 365 app may not be activated in your course. If you're the instructor of the course, you can edit the course navigation to make the app visible using the instructions in Customizing your Course Navigation.
- The Login button for the Office 365 app will attempt to open a pop-up window to prompt you to login through Microsoft. If you're unable to login, check to ensure that your browser isn't blocking pop-ups from Canvas. The steps for how to do this vary by browser, so you may need to search for instructions on the support site of the browser you're using.
