Faculty: Share videos with your students from Studio
Canvas Studio is the video hosting platform integrated with our Canvas Learning Management System. By default, videos you add to Studio, even if added through the course navigation menu, will only be viewable by you. To ensure your students are able to view your videos, please follow the steps below.
Save your video to Studio
To get started, you will need to have the video you want to share in Studio.
- Open Canvas in your browser of choice.
- Save the video you want to share to your Studio library.
Share a video with your entire class
Note: Even if you have the "Studio" link visible in your course navigation menu, students won't be able to see or click into it.
Embed a video in course content
Studio can be used anywhere in Canvas that the Rich Content Editor (RCE) is available. This includes Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, and Pages.
For the example below, an announcement is being used. The location for the Studio icon will be the same in other course content that you create or edit.
- In the Announcements page, click "+ Add Announcement".
- Enter a subject line for the announcement in the "Topic Title" box and enter any text you'd like to appear before the video into the "Topic content" box.
-
Note: As some students may read your announcement through email or push notifications, we recommend including a note to students that they should view the announcement within the Canvas course instead. This will ensure that permissions for the video and the video player work as intended.
- If you don't see an icon for Studio in the toolbar above the content box, click the Apps icon that looks like a plug, then click "View All".

- If your window is small or you're navigating Canvas without a mouse, it may be easier to use the menubar directly under the "Topic content" label instead. Click Tools, followed by Apps, then "View All".
- In the "All Apps" window that opens, type Studio into the search box. The list of apps will start to narrow as you type, so you may not need to type the full word.
- Click Studio in the search results.
- Studio may take a moment to load your video library. Once it does, locate and click on the video that you want to share with your students.
- You will have the option to preview your video and adjust the Embed options for the video as needed. Depending on the length of your video, whether it was added from YouTube, and where you're embedding the video, the options available may be different from the screenshot below.

- "Display Media Tabs" under the Basic options will be off by default. You can click the x toggle switch to the left to enable the comment section under your embedded video.
- For videos you created and uploaded, you may see an option to allow your students to download the video for offline playback. This will also be off by default.
- Once you've chosen the options you want, click "Embed Media".
- Your video will be added to the content box for your announcement. Depending on the size of your screen, you may want to increase the size of the content box by clicking and dragging the icon at the bottom right that looks like two columns of four dots.
- To resize the embedded video, click the video player, then use the squares in the corners of the video player or click "Studio Media Options" to enter specific dimensions.
- Click "Publish Announcement" to send your message and share the video with your students.
